Labyrinth is the first retake of a youth opera commissioned by Muziektheater TRANSPARANT created at De Singel in Antwerpen in August 2022.
The music is an association of the original score by Brice Soniano with the cycle Mind Map by Oene Van Geel.
The ensemble les 1001 Plateaux is being shaped especially for this new creation by some of the top European musicians from the new music / improvised scenes and by young talents selected after the TRANSPARANT summer youth camps 2021 and 2022
‘Lorsque Muziektheater TRANSPARANT m’a chargé de la création d’un opéra pour de jeunes musiciens, le sujet du Labyrinthe m’est apparu comme une évidence. Infiniment inspiré par la conception et la construction du Labyrinthe de Chartres, je me suis plongé corps et âme dans la composition d’une partition à la fois précise, accessible, et résolument ouverte. J’ai profité de cette invitation pour demander au compositeur et violoniste alto néerlandais Oene Van Geel de me prêter main forte pour la création de l’oeuvre. J’ai toujours admiré Oene pour sa musicalité exceptionnelle, pour son ouverture d’esprit et pour la profondeur de sa démarche artistique. Il a lui-même écrit une série de compositions qu’il a créé au BIMHUIS à Amsterdam au printemps 2022.
Suite à la création de cet été, et de son enthousiasme pour ma musique et pour notre collaboration, nous avons décidé de nous lancer dans une nouvelle création autour du LABYRINTHE pour l’’ensemble les 1001 PLATEAUX où nos compositions respectives deviennent le socle d’une nouvelle partition engageant l’ensemble des participants dans une écriture musicale commune où interprétations et improvisations ne font qu’un.’
